Easy Ways to Ensure Safety While Engaging in Water Sports

When it comes to driving and boat docking, Monroe residents surely have all of the different safety tips down pat. However, if you are planning to head out onto the water to enjoy some water sports, you want to make sure that you are able to do so in a way that is safe. This makes sure that everyone is able to have some fun and that there is never a concern over someone getting hurt.

Ensure Adequate Clearance

Before engaging in water sports, you want to make sure that there is enough space on the water to do so in a way that is safe. Look for other boaters, docks, buoys, mussel beds, aquaculture, moving boats or small vessels, pilings, sand bars, oyster reefs, moored boats or anything else that could serve as an obstruction. You want to make sure that you are no less than 500 feet from these before getting started. This helps to ensure that you have enough clearance to avoid an accident.

Make Sure That You Pick Up

If you notice that someone who was engaging in water sports is down in the water, offer to pick them up. This will help to prevent an even bigger accident from happening. Just make sure that you are approaching them from the downwind direction. As you pull up, they should be on the helm side of your boat. This will make it easier to visualize them and get them safely onboard.

Tow Items Properly

When you are towing items for water sports, such as inflatable tubes, you want to make sure that you do this properly to prevent them from getting hurt. Improper towing could also result in your boat sustaining damage. Never tow this type of item from the top of the boat or from a tower because this can result in too much stress, especially of the item you are towing happens to take a nosedive during the process.

Turn Your Engine Off

When you are picking people up or you are deploying riders, always make sure that your engine is turned off. Simply putting your engine in neutral increases the risk of an accident happening. Even if you have a lot of experience, still make sure to follow proper etiquette and turn off your boat’s engine.

Learning water sport safety is just as easy as it was to learn about the safety rules associated with boat docking. You can now use this information to keep your focus on the sports that are being enjoyed so that everyone is safe and able to have a good time.
