How To Make The Most Of Your Boat Storage Through Boat Care
Summer boat storage on Lake Erie is a key factor every boat owner needs to think about when purchasing their craft and deciding how they want to use it. The best thing that you can do in this regard is not to try and think about this as one big task, and instead as a series of smaller tasks, especially when it comes to taking care of their boat while it is in storage, and when it is going out of storage. This makes it easier for you to focus on making sure each piece of the job is handled effectively. Here are some of the key elements you want to keep in mind.
One of the first things you want to also do as a part of your boat check is take a good look at the prop. If things aren’t going right with this key component, then it’s not likely that you’re going to have a lot of success. Things that can go wrong with the prop vary wildly, from components needing to be replaced to the entire apparatus falling apart. Make sure that your prop nut and cotter pin are secured, especially in deep water, or you could be paying a lot for a replacement. This is pretty rare, though. More common things to look out for are making sure that dings or bent blades aren’t hurting your performance, and that there aren’t any fishing lines or other debris in the prop shaft or hub.
Another thing that every boat owner should do is try to find what the driest area on deck is and convert it into a dry storage area if possible, whether during the summer or winter. This may be difficult, but is worth it, especially if you plan on taking long-term trips. Things that can go into this area include water toys, towels, clothing, lifejackets, and other things that you would rather not get any moisture on.
Finally, you want to make sure that you are doing a proper engine check when it comes to your engine, as in many cases, an engine failure stems from something that could have easily been avoided. Start with basic things like checking the oil regularly, and trying to get a proper oil change from roughly 50-100 running hours. Your manual will tell you the type of oil that you need.
The thing about this advice is that while this list will help make sure that the basics of boat care are attended to, but you don’t want to stop there. If you’ve had a vessel for a while, chances are that the body of water that you sail on as well as the different ways that you use your boat may mean that certain issues are bigger than others. Keep these things in mind, like looking out for corrosion if you spend time in salt water.
